Did you do something like this: 

$ mv  alsa-util-0.9 0beta12.tar.bz2 download

Then you just renamed your file to 'download' ....
To find your 'lost' file you might want to have a look at
the gnu 'find' manpage. I'd look for files that where created
at a specific date.
