This is an example of the perils of insufficient testing (along with ignorance
+of some features of port forwarding).

It turns out that port forwarding code DOES work - it simply won't forward to
+the inside machine IF the request comes from a program running ON the
+masquerading Linux box.  Forwarding works fine if the request comes from
+outside the local network.

Sigh ..
