On the flip side of the coin -- why not build the newer PHP from .src.rpm,
so that it's built against your current db3 package instead of trying to
upgrade db3?

Yeah, but you're kind of wedging yourself between two rocks...  Try
building PHP from srpm.  Does the PHP source *NEED* the newer version of
the db3 library?
