[lug] xpdf and type 3 fonts

It isn't unusual to get xpdf messages saying that type 3 fonts are used
in a pdf doc, and that it might not display right. Much of the time it
works right anyway, but I ran into a document that was missing a lot
(mathematics symbols), and I was wondering if anyone knows what it takes
to get type 3 fonts available for xpdf? Is this something that is a
limit of xpdf, or would it be improved upon by an X11 font install? For
all I know, type 3 is some proprietary font that isn't available.
