The reason Red Hat used and uses 2.96 rather than 3.0 was not
stability.  It was that 3.0 is not binary compatible, and Red Hat's
policy requires that minor releases remain binary compatible, so 3.x
can't be used as the default compiler until 8.x.  You can get to 3.x on
Red Hat using the gcc3 packages.
