So far I have not had to do this on the RH 7.3, but I have in the past.
What irritated me most was that I had more than one brand of java
install, and some applications wanted sym links to one, while others
wanted sym links to others. Or I could set an environment variable, but
then I had to reset it differently for other programs (I suppose I could
have come up with an alias or shell script to set it properly, as a
wrapper to every java program). I don't even remember which programs
anymore, but it was enough to make me stop downloading any more java
utilities for a long time. I still avoid java-based apps in many cases.

So far I'm doing ok sticking with the recommendation for Sun
jre-1.3.1_04, though I have not tested it beyond very simple hello world
type apps.
