The only hint I can give you is that those applications seem to be links to
a "consolehelper". I would imagine consolehelper looks someplace else for
the actual binary.

I've seen behavior where while using gnome as an unprivliged user, it will
prompt for the system's root password to run some of the administration
gui's for redhat or mandrake or whatever. How do I force this behavior on
an application I want to run from a launcher in the panel?

 For they are a cranky lot and control the root password.
