This is not really a direct answer to your question but have you
looked at the _XFree86 Font De-uglification HOWTO_. It can be found
on the web at  http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/FDU/index.html .

I've only implemented a few of the solutions suggested in the HOWTO
and it helped me a lot.
