If it's a winmodem (most likely with a pci modem), then I believe that in
order for wvdial to see it, you will need to have the driver loaded first.
I've had pretty good luck with the lucent / agere modems - I've had three
i different laptops and all three worked.  I'm still using 2.2 kernels, so
I can't speak for the 2.4 kernels (maybe they have come up with integrated
drivers?) but in all three cases I used the lt_modem / lt_serial modules.
