Yes Ed ... it was I. I well remember talking with you.

For a Linux beginner like yourself, I'd recommend one of the
RPM-based
distros such as Red Hat, KRUD, Mandrake, or SuSE.

First, let me thank you, Ed and all the others, who wrote most
helpful notes about getting started in Linux! From your suggestions,
and the follow-up I was then able to do, it seems that Mandrake is
the way for me to go at the moment. I find that I can get the basic
Ver 8.2 from Amazon for 35$, and a PowerPack 8.2 version for 55$.
PowerPack contains KPE, Gnome, Star Office 6.0, Real Player 8.0,
Koffice 1.1.1, Evolution 1.0.2, Mozilla 0.9.8, and Acrobat Reader
4.0.5.

Questions:

1. What is KPE, Gnome, Koffice, and Evolution, and do I want them,
and why?

2. I already have Mozilla 1.1 and Acrobat Reader 5.0.1 installed on
my Windows machine (where Linux will also live). Can Linux use these
packages?

3. I'd like to use Star Office under both Linux and Windows. Are
there versions of Star office that will work under both, or must I
have separate versions for both?

With many thanks,
