[lug] stock kernels

Until recently one reason to use a Linus kernel (as opposed to a RedHat
kernel) was the new VM subsystem (which the kernel developers were
actively working with) rather than the older VM subsystem (which they
weren't) that RedHat continued using. That midstream change was quite
controversial at the time and RedHat chose to keep rev'ing old kernels
and backporting patches rather than switch to the new VM. It is true
that one of the different subsystems would perform better than the
other under specific high load conditions, and there may be some
benefit in using one over the other for certain applications.

In addition RedHat will remove certain drivers/etc (in addition to
adding some) from the RH kernels that don't perform suitably in their
QA testing. Using a 'Linus' kernel in those cases may allow for use of
specific devices (or whatever), with the understanding that there was
probably a reason RH didn't include that support in their kernel.

Personally, when I use RH (or SuSE or Mandrake, etc), I tend to use
their kernels unless I have some specific reason not to.

PS- I'm not David, and am interested in his reasoning, but the above
are my thoughts on the matter.
