I assume that by URL you mean FQDN.  A URL is a FQDN with a protocol
indicator in front of it and, optionally, a resource after it.  I.e.
www.hutnick.com is a FQDN and http://www.hutnick.com is a simple URL and
http://www.hutnick.com/fcp/ is a more complex URL.

Anyway, that's weird.  Does dig work?  Are your browsers configured with
any proxy settings?  It is very strange that two browsers won't resolve
but ping will.  Does lynx or links work?
