If you are looking for a standard Distro, use Debian. It
starts out small and you add on from there. Just only use
what you need, and that will be about as fast as you can get
a system to run with a standard distro.

For a bit of a speed increase, you can re-compile the kernel
for your system, remove un-needed pieces, and perhaps add in
a few patches....but this will not be a huge increase as
most of the system is still compiled for a generic x86
system, not yours.

The real solution to get the maximum possible speed is to
compile *everything*...which cannot easily be done with a
standard distribution. There is, however, a distro
dedicated to this. I, unfortunately, cannot recall the name
off the top of my head, but I'm certain someone else on the
list will be happy to fill in the blank.

Of course, as someone lese noted, there is the question of
drivers for specialized hardware most AV editing
requires....that is a sepperate issue.
