[lug] xawtv/video frame grabber question

I have a weird problem with a video frame grabber. I originally
attempted to contact the author of xawtv, but his mail host is one
of those that refuse mail from cable modem users and after further
research I'm not sure if the problem is in the application or
kernel....

In a nutshell, I have a 2.4.20 kernel, 4.x X server, and a BTTV
card. Xawtv works - I can watch either TV or a camcorder. (The
channels are off by one, but that's a minor nit.)

However I can't grab the image. It's not just the problems caused
by the Xvideo extensions (which I can turn off) - both the webcam
and came applications report that it's impossible to throw the
frame grabber card into the proper mode.

Has anyone else encountered a similar problem, or more importantly
found a way to fix it?

BTW, I would test the card under Windows, just to make sure it's
not some weird hardware fault, but since I only have the
distribution CD and my original (consumer-version) Windows ME disc
I'm missing three drivers. Two unnamed, to add that extra touch
of elegance to search attempts. (yeah, two unnamed drivers for
unknown devices... should be a piece of cake to find.) That's
still better than the el-cheapo CompUSA USB card that is missing
five separate drivers... and customer support is very unhelpful
since they "know" that Windows ME provides those drivers and I'm
just some doofus who can't figure out how to run "Add Program."
