When your frustration level gets to the point that you're ready to
give up on re-installing 98 and still want to access your precious
data, try this alternate solution:

1- Grab a bootable Linux CD or burn an iso Gentoo stage 1
(gentoo.org)
2- Boot from CD
3- insmod your eth0 module (follow the gentoo stage 1 instructions)
4- mount FAT /dev/hda1 (assuming what you want to save is on 1st
IDE)
5- ftp important files to a reliable machine -- a Linux server ;)
