I used redhat from version 4.2 to 7.2. But, after starting with Debian
last year, I won't be going back to redhat.

You say you want "the latest". Debian separates "the latest" from
"known to be stable". Debian has 3 distributions at any time: stable,
testing, and unstable. Currently, their names respectively are woody,
sarge, and sid.

I have systems with running each distribution. I like stable (woody)
for running production servers, testing (sarge) for workstations, and
unstable (sid) for development machines and trying out the latest
software. Most of my systems run sid. Things change rapidly in sid; I
get between 20 to 50 packages updated each day. Sometimes these new
packages may be broken for a short time, but they get fixed rapidly.

If you are committed to running Debian 3.0 (woody/stable); there are a
few apt repositories that had have backported packages (such as
gnome2.2) to woody. http://www.debianplanet.org has had a few articles
about such repositories.

In general, if you really want the latest software as opposed to the
most tested/stable software, you may want to use the sid (unstable)
distribution rather than woody (stable).
