Have you tried using Savin's UNIX "driver"?  It looks like a shell
script that adds bits to printcap.  It was designed for RH 6.x and 7.x,
though, so YMMV.

But, it looks like it might detect printconf, and add to
/etc/printcap.local as it should, but I'd still be careful.  Of course,
I'm not a printer guru, as my printers have always been in distro.
