You may want to check the kernel documentation, I thought those 
names were command line arguments when you boot the system.  You 
would capture this with LILO or GRUB - you just select "home" or 
"work" when you boot the system and the system will load the 
appropriate mappings.

(Or you could do what I did - set up your own DHCP server at home 
with static MAC->IP address mappings.)

I don't know what the mapping file does, but maybe the kernel doc 
discusses it.
