On a related note, I've found it tremendously useful to copy 
busybox, vi, gzip and a real tar into my initrd.  If I hose my 
development system I can usually use the initrd image as an 
adequate rescue disk.  Some day I'll submit a proposal to SysAdmin 
magazine describing it in detail...
