[lug] tcpdump, routing, ppp, and cable modem questions(s)

The comcast cable modems I have setup in boulder have straight 
ethernet LAN connections from the firewall/computer to the modem. 
PPP wan't required, just DHCP to get the address. Why is PPP 
being used?
