What happens to _their_ copy of the code. The copyright owner can decide to
stop releasing new versions. But there seems to be no doubt about the code
that allready is out there: the GPL can't be revoked. Oh, another thing the 
company has to consider: iff (as the OP said) the code is out on sourceforge
than there's a good chance that code flew back from outside In that cases the
code is "contaminated" by external GPLed code -- which makes it impossible 
to change the licence.

Yes, the _first_ thing i clear with my employers is: "who owns the copyrights"
(it seems that this question is much easier to answer over here: unless specified
in the contracts the copyright [which is called "Urheberrecht" --> _creators right_]
remains with the person who _wrote_ the stuff.
