Thanks to all who responded to my question about
'mkbootdisk -- no space left on device'.

I came across a very nice solution at the bottom of
http://cmisip.home.insightbb.com/advanced.htm

which also has a link for Hans Ulrich's
largeboot.sh

The sequence outlined on the web page produced
a boot diskette for my machine that works very well.
