[lug] grep as imap client?

You can use grep actually. You need access to the mail file up on
the server through. I use postfix and put a .mailbox in every user's
home directory. UW-IMAP is told where the inbox file is (.mailbox) for
each user. Then this file can be 'grep'd. Cyrus can be built to know
where your mailboxes are too.

However, imap is smart enough to build-in these search features. A
good GUI mail client can do the searching using the IMAP interface in a
very fast way. Eudora supports this and so does Outlook. I don't know
about the browser-based e-mail programs though. Outlook sometimes needs
an extra kick to cooperate with non-exchange IMAP servers.
