A smart client will issue a "search" across all mailboxes.  Usually a
"find" is also implemented for a single mailbox.  The short of it is,
pick a good client and it's matching IMAP server for best results.  You
can also use IMAP in a POP-like way by downloading message contents but
leaving attachments on the server (to make it faster).  The normal way
is to download headers only.  If you download messages you can search
them in your local cache.
