[lug] OT: static electricity

At one place I used to have this problem where every time I walked up to
my computer I would zap the keyboard. I would just unplug it and plug
it back in (hot) and it would work again. That is where I started using
the spray with dilute soap.

I had another computer hooked up through lap link to a Compaq laptop, I
walked up and pressed the power switch on the Compaq and got a good zap.
That fried the parallel port on my computer. Strange thing is it did
not hurt the Compaq. That computer was always sort of flaky after
that, like the first boot after a power up would hang, but after that is
was ok (mostly). I guess there is something to be said for quality
equipment, even though I don't personally like Compaq.

Carl.

A zap through the signal lead of a mouse can fry a motherboard/ps.
I know through unfortunate experience -- I reached for the mouse, there
was discharge to the mouse and the system died hard. You might be able
to do it through speakers too.
