The problem was our R3000 URL filter.  It's suppose to inspect only http
traffic and block access to inappropriate websites.  It's been working great
for years.  But lately, for some reason, it's been killing some smtp and ftp
connections.  So we disabled the filter.  I have a call into tech support...
