I'm sorry I never responded to this. Busy week.

I tried some cheap internal non-winmodem modem at first many years ago and it was constantly going out to lunch. A cheap USR Sportster external fixed all ills.

So.. is there a specific modem type I would look for, or will a standard
no-frills modem work?

I am seeing a lot of modems that have administrative features on them.
Perhaps these serve the same function as what mgetty provides?
