More on the modem thing...

Depending on the level of security vs. functionality you need, there are modems out there that can easily just be plopped on a serial port, you set up a serial console, and go.  Some of the higher end modems can do callback to a specific number to add security complexity to the design if needed.  At one time I saw one that would filter incoming calls via caller ID/ANI information. 

That said... I'd be a moderate cheapskate and buy a nice external modem (so you can walk someone completely untrained through troubleshooting because they can tell you what das blinkenllights are doing, even if you're not there) and use mgetty -- that gets you the most flexibility.
