[lug] SATA cards?

I highly recommend the 3Ware 9500-S series of cards.  They are pricey 
but provide excellent performance and feature set. ( Background verify, 
Read-Error Recovery, etc ).   For instance with 4 Maxtor 7200 RPM drives 
configured in raid5, I'm getting 180-188MB/sec read and 88MB/sec writes.
