I think I like the hole punch idea better :P In general though I think 
Saunders overcharges for most products. Unfortunately, I think a hole 
punch might not be able to reach the spot it would have to open up 
without total disassembly of the entire case, including some wire harnesses.

It's tempting to make a dedicated PC board solution to extend to the IDE 
drive area without use of regular wiring...basically make it like a 
backplane along the floor and sides with a connector at both ends, such 
that the ends only need a 6 inch cable. You'd still get a length in 
excess of standards, but I'm pretty sure a shielded backplane type 
system would have no problem exceeding length standards without trouble. 
PC board material itself is rather cheap...I'm guessing the whole thing 
could be done for $15 (and a lot more effort).
