Paper size maybe?  Sounds like a default that's been changed on you. 
You could compare the versions between SuSE and Kubuntu and perhaps look 
at the source packages for different configure settings.

I doubt a faster card would help.  I doubt it's xfree86 vs. xorg.  Do 
you have the same amount of free memory under both?  Were you using KDE 
on SuSE?  If something else is using all your memory now that would slow 
down big documents.

For both of these I'd google them (that will pick up Ubuntu forums as 
well as the Debian and gv mailing lists).  You might check the Debian 
bug tracker too (and the Kubuntu one, if they have a separate one).  Or 
ask on the gv lists.
