[lug] 2.6.18 kernel and initrd

I'm running Debian testing, and have been trying to build a 2.6.18
kernel (the standard distribution from kernel.org). I create the initrd
image using

    mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.18 2.6.18

I noticed that the result is much smaller than images I have created for other
kernels:

    WAY2FONKY$ ls -lh /boot/initrd.img-2.6.*
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3.3M 2006-08-18 01:54 /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17.8
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.4M 2006-09-23 14:33 /boot/initrd.img-2.6.18
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4.6M 2005-12-28 16:08 /boot/initrd.img-2.6.8-dbr
    WAY2FONKY$

When I try to boot the new kernel, I get a kernel panic (something about
a gzip error) when trying to get to the initrd image.

Has anyone had any difficulty with init RAM and 2.6.18?

Thanks,
Dhruva
