I use postfix simply to avoid the sendmail way of editing
configurations with the m4 thingy.  Also because it seems cleaner;
sendmail was rather busy with all the configs, some not so easy to
understand. Then again because at the time of my switch sendmail
seemed to be tripping up bugs too often.

I used exim and it was nice and clean as well but as a community
effort it didn't seem to have enough howto's such as smtp-auth.

I used uw-imap but found mailbox methods to be expensive to various
email clients. Red Hat later adopted dovcot and I tried it; it
smoothly transferred from uw-imap but I was stuck with mailbox files
still. I didn't see if it could to maildir but jumped quickly to
courier-imap for maildir and virtual shares. I never did figured out
how the shared dirs work yet either. But courier seems to be a
favorite around the net IMO.

My next project is to do a virtual user/domain postfix courier mysql
clamav spamassassin amavisd and whatever else goes with it setup. I
see lots of those howto's at howtoforge.com
