Hmm. I didn't find the answer to my question when I searched Google, but I did find patches people were making to change from using /dev/stderr to using the shell or program's inherent file descriptor syntax. I guess I should assume that redirecting to /dev/stderr is deprecated? Or maybe it was never wise, I don't know.
