Problem solved: loose video socket connection. I never suspected this
because I was getting some image.

log in and set initdefault to 3 in /etc/inittab

fiddle with the monitor settings in xorg (using startx to test and
Ctrl-Alt-Bksp to kill) until it works again.

make a backup xorg.conf named xorg.conf.homemonitor or something so that
when/if you get burned again you can put it back.
