All very good questions I'd like to know more about too.  I have
noticed for various reasons the same thing but never pondered their
reasoning.  Most of my frustration has been with only having
Howto/readme instructions to the compiled versions and not the RPM
versions.  In general the RPM is easier to install and maintain the
updates vs knowing when the compiled version is due for upkeep.  I
personally resort to the 'rpm -ql <package>' quite frequently to
cross-reference with the Howto/readme.  Keeping the tar ball around
for this purpose is a lot of extra baggage IMO.
