*whack*  Yup, that was it.  I thought I had tried it, but apparently
hadn't.

sudo doesn't like to be straced, unfortunately.  At least not by
non-root users.

I thought they had been using a weird variable. I see now that the
backslash was to escape the space in "Domain admins".
