Wow - /dev/video0 works!  Thank you!  How can I view the file?

$ cat /dev/video0 > temp.mpg
$ file temp.mpg
temp.mpg: MPEG sequence, v2, program multiplex

I've tried ...
  lavplay  only does quicktime and avi
  yuvplay  does nothing
  playdv   just shows random color blobs
  lqtplay  quicktime only
  rootv    appears to be live tv only, not from files
  xine     cannot find decoder (see below)
  mplayer  shows only snow (see below for messages)

mplayer plays for the correct length of time (it's a 10 second clip),
but shows only snow.  It reports:
