I have a Canon ZR45MC I bought around 4 years ago.. Importing works fine
using regular Firewire (no capture card) and the Kino application. The
camera itself isn't HD quality by any means but I don't lose any quality
when I import to a Raw DV format (consumes massive storage space
though). The quality and synchronization factors come into play more
when you export the media and decide which codecs to encode with, how
many passes the encoding will take, etc.
