I'm trying to add a terminal icon to the default panel in RH5.

I haven't found a tool that will let me make the change on a global basis.

It looks like I need to edit /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/%gconf-tree.xml

Unfortunately, the file is long and makes it hard to pick out the areas
that I want to focus on.

Does anyone know of a way to conveniently add an icon to the default
panel?

If not, does anyone have a favorite xml editor that allows you to collapse
subsections that works well on linux?
