ok, i got bold and just inserted the drive.

then i tried to add the partition back to the array

#  mdadm --add /dev/md1 /dev/sdb2
 cannot find /dev/sdb2: No such file or directory

#  ls /dev/sd*
/dev/sda  /dev/sda1  /dev/sda2  /dev/sda3

so the devices are not there, probably because they weren't created at
boot since the drive was pulled.  how do i get the devices back? i think
this will work
