Thanks for all the advice on this everyone.  I'm still nowhere close to 
getting these things to work but it's good to know that I've covered the 
bases from what people have written.

I really do not want to change the OS just because the entire thing is 
configured already for my backup system but I think this might come down 
to trying a different OS.
