I've had some success using hp-info to query the printer to find out why it's cranky.  Sometimes there's also no USB support in the linux driver that HP provides, but it looks like yours should do USB fine: http://hplip.sourceforge.net/models/color_laserjet/hp_color_laserjet_2605dn.html
