[lug] FSF plans Apple Genuis Bar "denial of service"

Not to post a "me too", but I also agree with Nate. I'm a died in the
wool Apple convert for everything on the desktop and personal side of
computing. Apple takes care of their customers, more so than any
company I've ever had to deal with. I have complete confidence that
solving my problems is the top priority of the genius bar. Every time
I've had to deal with them their employees have been absolute
professionals. They never second guess me and always go above and
beyond the contractual warranty. In example I had a battery for a
laptop that was out of warranty and started acting up. They replaced
it free of charge without hesitation.

Neither Apple or their employees should be the target of this
anti-DRM hatred. The content providers are solely to blame. Where
possible iTunes offers content without DRM. As far as DRM and control
of application distribution for iPhone, Apple has made it very clear
why they are doing this. Their primary objective is to ensure a
quality user experience. They don't want malware or bloatware hogging
up the phone resources. They also have contractual commitments with
their carriers (AT&T) that prevent certain uses of their network.
Apple is legally obligated to ensure that those contractual agreements
are enforced. If you don't like it, go buy an OpenMoko. For me, the
iPhone is really a killer device, and a real joy to develop for. In
addition, distribution via iTunes eliminates all the overhead for
independent software developers and provides them a way to easily
monetize their work. I expect that this central distribution model
will actually encourage more development for the iPhone, not hinder
it.
