O'Reilly has a pretty good book:

Backup & Recovery
By W. Curtis Preston
January 2007
Pages: 760
ISBN 10: 0-596-10246-1 | ISBN 13: 9780596102463

It discusses several backup options, including Amanda,
BackupPC and Bacula. It suggests that BackupPC is
particularly suited for backups of a machine
which is only intermittently connected to the network,
which seems to be the situation you are in.
