Followup - it turns out there's a single mini-PCIe slot.  It's usually 
used for wifi, but you could also get a cheap SSD disk.  I guess the 
proper 'diskless' mode (e.g., for a kiosk) is to put / on the CF, and 
put swap, /home, and /var/log onto the SSD.  That should minimize the 
number of writes to the CF.
