Okay, I'll pick it up later this week.  No rush.  

One other minor thing while I've got your attention Kevin:  gdm now
makes a little "bloop" kinda noise when I login.  Any way to turn that
off?  I hate those noises.  I disabled the pc speaker so it wouldn't
beep (loudly) on shutdown by adding the following
to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

blacklist pcspkr

Since the gdm sound didn't go away I assume its using the sound system
(PulseAudio?).  Is there a config to disable this?  I found this but
couldn't make heads or tails of the workaround:
