[lug] An odd networking question

I just now figured out why my laptop doesn't like to talk over the wired
connection but does just fine over the wireless - I'm just not sure what
to do about it.

It was really odd as I was just trying to use skype to talk to a guy in
Chicago and figured that perhaps the wireless was part of the problem
(since it appeared to be a bandwidth issue.)

However, when I turn off wireless skype does work, but nothing else
will. Firefox can't find anything, email client can't connect, etc.

Still not sure why skype works (except I think it's because it's UDP)
but when I rebooted with the wireless off, my resolv.conf remains empty.

Turn on the wireless, it gets populated.

The wired connection is not managed by NetworkManager. Yes, this all
seems obvious in retrospect, but it brings up the following question:

Anyone have any pointers on what to search for, things to read, etc to
help me get this sorted out?

As you can most likely tell, networking is not my strong point, so
references that assume you know a lot most likely aren't going to help
me out a lot.

Ubuntu 9.04, 64bit

Thanks for any assistance.
