[lug] checking for 64 bit fedora

Now I know I can try to look at package names and versions, or refer to an original install CD to find out whether a flavor of linux is actually running 64 bit or not. I have an opteron system though that works great with 64 or 32 bit, and the issue simply calls it i686. Is there a way, perhaps in /proc, to look at something like kernel symbols or some other direct way to see if the kernel sees the system itself as 64 bit? E.G., the /proc/cpuinfo only shows the specification of the cpu, not how the o/s is using it. Is there some sort of 64 bit fingerprint for a running system which root can see but does not rely on package naming?
