Check control-alt-f3/f4 consoles for more verbose errors?

Are you doing nfsv3 or nfsv4 on the f12 box? 
I don't know if/think centos5.4 will install from a nfsv4 server.

You can mount it from another centos system?

Check for more errors as above, check versions. 
You can also use the shell on control-alt-f2 in the installer to try
some things and narrow it down.
